Paris Fashion Week SS18 Day 7 – John Galliano

I couldn’t believe the entire month had flown by so quickly. I was ending my fashion month experience in Paris, with none other than John Galliano. When I first started attending fashion events and runway shows, I would go to the bookstore and occasionally flip through fashion editorials and biography books. It was so long ago, but those few first memories that we each take for granted that are hidden in the back of our mind are the building blocks of things that light a fire inside of us. Then, as you pursue your passions, you’ll be reminded of why you do what you do.

When I first truly became interested in runway shows, John Galliano was early in his career at Christian Dior. Now, he designs and creates for his namesake label and Maison Margiela. There are no words to describe how thrilled and honored I feel to be able to see Galliano’s work in person. He’s created some of those most outrageous and beautiful pieces in his life. He always has a way of creating pieces that are over-the-top. In a frenzy of packing for this trip, I wish I had brought my John Galliano heels and vintage Christian Dior blazer to honor him at this show, but here’s hoping there’s another opportunity to wear something new of his in the future at an event or show.It was such a pleasure to see this final show with one of my BFFs, Stella. Being able to share the experience it with someone you have so much fun with really elevates the experience! I feel so incredibly grateful and blessed to have this opportunity.

For Spring/Summer 2018, John Galliano’s collection is about embracing the bad girl. Galliano takes inspiration from John Water’s cult romance musical, Cry Baby, which shares the romance between lovers. The push and pull between lovers is really a perfect fit for John Galliano. He has a knack for being able to bring out over the top designs in such dramatic emotions. There were great moments where you could feel that a wild-and-free glamorously dressed girl was caught in a papparazzi moment.

John Galliano created his collection in a lighter pastel colour palette. I love the mix of chiffon and lace. The slip dresses with incrustations and floral bud adornments create a feel of effortless romanticism. The pink full skirt dress has such softness and femininity, and he often used print silk chiffons, re-embroidered petals, and full skirts throughout this collection. The men’s shirts are enhanced with ruched plackets and frock coats which give it a great sense of historicism and boyish attitude. There were also masculine jackets and beautiful bias-cut dresses. Galliano took the softness of the fabrics, transparencies and delicate lace detail and balanced them out with the hardness of the boots embellished with buckles; an ode to the rebel.

The box jacket with black and white lace slip, the white tuxedo suit with black piping, embroidered coats and beautiful bright pink full skirt dress are among my favourites.
