The Trench Coat

February 3, 2020

Stepping into 2020, I was more certain than ever to be more conscious about the purchases I made, and if you are as well, then this post is perfect for you because we are looking at one of the most classic pieces you can add to your wardrobe: the trench coat. This wonderful outerwear category has been trending for the last couple seasons, in multiple cuts, finishes and variations.

Making the decision to be sustainable doesn’t necessarily mean buying newly produced items that were made with eco-friendly processes, and neither does it mean pushing yourself to solely buy pre-loved items. I truly believe that if something makes you happy, it’s okay to let yourself make a fantastic purchase that falls out of both of these categories. However, I think it’s important to be mindful about what you’re going to buy and how it fits in your lifestyle, so that you can wear it over and over again and keep it in your regular fashionable rotation for the long term.

Owning a great classic piece with no frills can never steer you wrong. You can always style it in various ways with different accessories to elevate your final look.

I’ve linked a great selection below, including some from notable brands, including Jacquemus, Tibi and Burberry.

If you’re looking for something a little different from the classic trench, a perfect way to balance classic, modern shapes is paying attention to the finishing details, such as the buttons, piping, contrast stitching, modern patterns, and so forth.

One of my favourites from this season is this Jacquemus cotton trench. I can layer it over a sweater so that it’s great for cooler weather, or wear a lace cami and a pair of jeans underneath to keep it light and casual.  I’ve styled it over some pieces in my closet, including this soft cotton turtleneck from Nordstrom, MM6 Maison Margiela Silk Trouser and these Yuul Yie Heels. My bag is sold out. I’ve linked other beautiful architectural bags.

I’ve linked my outfit for you to shop below. You can also visit my Shop Page to find more great pieces to invest in for this season to wear year after year.

Below you’ll find some stylish inspiration on how to wear a trench coat. A full-length trench coat is one of my favourites pieces trending this season, and I think they are a perfect permanent piece for any closet. If you ever put on a dress then a coat over it to find that it isn’t the ideal length, the ankle length is the perfect way to resolve that
