Back around 2005, I sat with my girlfriend riding the bus, and somehow while chatting about colors, prints and patterns she brought up Marimekko. It was the first I’d ever heard of the brand. She was so animated about them that I felt compelled to take a closer look into the label. In a world where you find companies rebranding themselves and coming up with new logos, Marimekko has a strong root in its heritage and their brand recognition and awareness is done so well that when you see their prints, you know exactly who its from. To this day, you can spot a bag, cushion, dress, accessory from this label and say, “That’s Marimekko.”This season, held at the Musee des Arts Decoratis, I was able to see Marimekko’s Spring/Summer 2019 ready to wear collection, themed Bold by Nature – edxploring different interpretations of boldness and empowerment through joy and self-expression.
The collection included large bags, beautiful coats, romantic dresses; each colorful and more captivating than the last. The modern silhouettes worked so wonderfully with what I consider to be classic prints of Marimekko. These new organic prints create a playful dialogue with their distinctive patterns from 1950’s to 1980s. The colour palette includes grass green, bright red and monochromatic prints which have all been printed at Marimekko’s in-house factory in Helsinki.
My favourite was the monochromatic black and white jacket and skirt but as many of you know, I’d have no qualms about wearing any of these silhouettes or prints on a day out in the city.
The backstage beauty looks feature a woman’s natural beauty. Kenji Toyota for Shiseido created a natural texture in the hair and slicked it back into effortless ponytails. Make up is from Clinique, using one of my favourites, Clinique Moisture Surge. With the boldness of the prints, Marimekko focuses on earthy tones and highlighting eyebrows, lips on distinctive features on the face.
I absolutely loved seeing each look and love these silhouettes. Let me know which is your favourite below!
