When I chose to visit San Diego in the first week of January, I was I was told it practically never rained. Southern California is known for beautiful weather with lots of sun.
I looked at the weather forecast on my phone only to find that it’d rain all week. Some of you are getting tons of snow and where I was, I was getting cold weather with all-day rain. There were floods at the highway entrances and tons of road closures due to the down pour and little to no sun to see. Let’s just say, it put a damper on my week. Pun intended.
When I stepped outside in the cold wet weather, I really wanted to brighten my mood and day. The best way to do this is through the clothes I chose to wear. Black is typical and expected in cold seasons. I didn’t pack a lot of bright clothing, but white is something that makes me feel light and happier in bad weather. The dampness makes me feel cold when there’s a breeze, so I threw on a grey sweater. Luckily, I had this hat to protect me from the drizzle. There was a moment where the wind was so strong that I had to hide out, so in an opportune moment, Tom took a few pictures here and we jumped back into the car and drove off in the rain.
When you’re dressing for drab weather, reach for bright pieces or lighter colors. It can be uplifting in harsh weather. Just make sure you dress warmly!
Here are my top tips for wearing white in colder weather:
- If you’re worried about being cold, accessorize a crew or v-neck top by layering a colorful scarf.
- A black or colored turtleneck is simple, yet classic. They’re so cozy, warm and are a staple for your wardrobe. Pair with well-fitted pair of jeans or pants (wide leg, skinny, boot cut, etc).
- Choose a chromatic scheme, like all-white. Or, like I have here, wear your coat with some lighter neutrals. If you start to wear more than 3 colors in various pieces that are not complementary, it can be distracting and look like it wasn’t done on purpose.
- Don’t be afraid to accessorize with winter accessories. A hat and scarf or hat, boots and cute mitts can make a spring-weather coat look perfect for winter.

Thanks so much Adrienne. 🙂 Xo, Miki
I have to be honest – I could never keep a white coat clean. I live in the city and use public transport and we have a lot of nasty weather…
White looks beautiful, though. I’d love to wear it more. I do in summer of course.
I love bright colours. I do have a bright yellow leather jacket (well, also hard to keep clean). And I love red.
Haha, I don’t blame you. When transit is packed and it’s snowed, it can be more challenging. Red and yellow also sound great. 🙂 Thanks for your comment. Xo,
Miki

I absolutely love how you’ve styled this, now I really feel like venturing out and buying myself a nice crisp, white coat. I think it would be the perfect addition to my wardrobe.
