Back in Toronto, I really enjoyed shopping with some of my closest friends. We’d send a few text messages back and forth and before you knew it, we were at the mall with a bubble tea or coffee in hand and popping into all the stores to see what was new. It’s such a great little social activity to do with some gal pals and It’s something I really miss back in Toronto.
Shopping at each city destination is always a treat. I think it’s the thrill of finding something you wouldn’t find at home, and scoring a great deal when you see something you love. When it comes to luxury bags and shoes, I prefer shopping in store. I always like to see how a bag is on my arm or in my hands. I hate shoes that can’t walk in for more than a couple of hours, so I’m always trying shoes on. Most luxury brands don’t really go on sale unless you go to an outlet store or buy from a trusted online consignment e-tailer, so when I shop for high street apparel, I like to see if there’s a deal or discount available before checkout.
This off-the-shoulder floral dress is one that I purchased online. I love finding pieces that are easy to travel with and require no steaming. It’s a simple dress I can wear out to dinner here in the city or when I am away on vacation. It was in their new arrivals, but I got it during a one day sale – score!
Even if we make a steady income, I’d like to think that most of us still like to score a deal. Like I said, I love to travel, so it’s a great way to re-distribute some of those savings to more extravagant travels and purchases for when I’m abroad. With that in mind, I thought this would be a great opportunity to share some shopping tips.
Here are My Top 5 Ways to Score Discount & Deals When Shopping Online
1) Mailing List
The most basic that some of you might already know of is the mailing list promo code. Sometimes by joining the mailing list for the first time, the retailer sends you a promo code to use on your first purchase. Often it’s a percentage, like 10% off your first order.
2) Promo Codes
Sometimes, even when there is an advertised sale of 50% off on a retailer’s site, you’ll be able to score an additional discount by inputting a promo code at check out. Search on Google for the retailer’s name with words discount code or promo code to maximize your search. I have actually saved an additional 25% off items that were already 50% off.
3) Leaving Items in the Shopping Cart
There are days I spend way too long shopping on a website, so I usually leave and continue on another day. Sometimes by putting items into the virtual shopping cart or wishlist and leaving it there for a few days, the retailer sends you a reminder with a subject heading saying something along the lines of, “Psst! You Forgot Something In Your Cart!”. Some retailers will try to woo you into purchasing the items by offering an additional discount off whatever is already in your cart or wishlist. This gets you discounts on regular priced and occasionally, sale items and is particularly good when you’re not in a hurry for the goods.
4) Shopping Aggregate Sites
If you know the name and color of your item, you can enter it into the Google search engine. At the top there’s a “shopping” link that you can click on. It’ll help you source a competitive price comparing retailers to each other. Sometimes searching on Google and hitting the “Shopping” tab can help you find the best price. A site like Shop Style is a good place to shop as well.
5) Wish List Sale Notifications
Some online retailers, shopping sites and apps will notify you if something on your wish list or saved item list goes on sale. This is also a good way to score a deal if you are not in a hurry for something. However, keep in mind that if it seems really popular, the item may go out of stock or be sold out in your size by the time this happens.
Those are my top 5 tips on scoring discounts off your online purchase. I hope you enjoyed this post. If you have your own tips, I’d love to hear them! I’m always happy to learn how to score a good deal on something I like.

Such a cute dress! I never thought of just adding clothes in the basket and waiting for the ecommerce store to send me a reminder notification (and hopefully with a discount code!). I will have to start doing that now :3
