One of the highlights of moving to another city is experiencing new things. Toronto Fashion Week was an event that I attended twice a year. When I couldn’t attend this year, it dawned on me that I had taken my lifestyle back there for granted. I ended up feeling really sad about it at first, but then it turned into a strong desire to make the most of what I had here. Luckily, in the midst of Toronto Fashion Week, Los Angeles was having their own Style Fashion Week, also known as LA Fashion Week (LAFW). As a newcomer, I didn’t want to miss this chance of dressing up, checking out a new spot and seeing clothes come down a runway.
In place of a little party dress that I had I had pulled aside, I decided to wear a classic grey dress by Greta Constantine purchased from a prior season. Greta Constantine has presented their collection in both Paris and Toronto, and happened to be the closing show at Toronto Fashion Week the very same night I was attending LAFW. This also marked their 10th year as a fashion label, so there was no better way to celebrate the occasion than to wear a Canadian fashion label, so as Greta Constantine went down the runway, I would be wearing one of their own. It was a very East Coast look for a very West Coast event.
You know how there are power suits? This is my equivalent of a power dress. It’s classy, elegant, simple, yet different. Great for a job where you want to be the boss and still nice to wear out to dinner and events afterwards. With the dress, I wore my suede Prada open toe heels decked out with crystal. I paired those with my vintage Versace belt. This ZARA clutch is one I’ve used so many times and never get sick of.
LAFW started in the evening. As we approached the event site, I was caught off guard by a brief glimpse of the crowd and backdrop of the stage behind the fenced up wall. An outdoor fashion week was something I had not thought of, as I had always attended fashion week in cooler climate, so that in itself got me excited!
The other thing about LAFW that caught my attention were the models. On runways around the world, you have tall and lean models. For LAFW, there were some who were busty, curvy with different shapes and sizes. Overall, LAFW had a different approach to fashion week than the rest of the world and in some ways, laid back; fit for West Coast lifestyle.
Below are a few pictures from the Mario de le Torre, Foxbait and Armature shows.
My favorite look of the night was this all white look.
Going to LAFW was a humbling experience and reminded me of what it was like to attend a show for the first time. I’m so grateful for being able to experience LAFW outdoors and am curious to how this might grow in the long run.
