New York Fashion Week Diary – Day 1

February 18, 2017

NYFW Street Style Fashion BloggerWords cannot describe how it feels every time I go back to New York. At best, I’d call it a mix of excitement and nostalgia. Like returning to a childhood home your family doesn’t own anymore, it feels so familiar, makes you happy, miss it to bits, but know it’s not yours.

As an extrovert, going on social outtings is something that feels most comfortable and natural to me. Toronto is like a very compact version of New York. Having visited 2-4 times a year for numerous years makes the city feel like a second home.

To be honest, I originally wasn’t sure I’d return to New York Fashion Week (NYFW) this season. About a week before the start of NYFW, I decided to stop sitting on the fence, booked my flight and scrambled to pull outfits together. While I had attended shows and backstage previews in be past, it had been a couple of years since I’d been, and this was the first time I was flying out on behalf of my own brand, so I was nervous and excited at the same time. It sound really ridiculous, but I had a feeling it would be very different.

NYFW Street Style Pink TrendNYFW Street Style FashionNYFW Street Style Fashion BlogNYFW Street Style Day 1 NYFW Street StyleNYFW Street Style BlogFor me, this week was mostly about outerwear, but I have been obsessed with the all pink & rose colored looks since seeing the Spring/Summer 2017 runway collections back in September, so for my first look I went all out with an explosion of pink. I would’ve even worn pink shoes and a spring bright fushia coat had it not been for the snow, but I thought better of it and went for something more weather appropriate.

Off the shoulder is still trendy, but if you have been eyeing runway trends, you’ll see that it’s all about asymmetry. For Spring/Summer, go for one shoulder/side different from the other. Here, I just went off one shoulder. I layered over pieces I already owned in the closet from 3 to 8 years back. My earrings are inspired by Dior. I didn’t see them in Paris at the Dior store when I dropped by, so I found a very inexpensive similar pair. I’m so glad I brought cropped pants. With snow up to my shins, I went with cropped pants and silver boots.

DAY 1 of NYFW

Tadashi Shoji
Tadashi Shoji’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection reflects the wave of change taking over the world. From the streets of London and Paris to Berlin and Japan, this unrest will set you in motion. I’ve selected some of my favourite looks below. The collection was dominated by gowns and dresses. Many of which had detailed lace. My favourite is the final look with draping of the material off the shoulder. It’s perfect.

Erin Fetherston
Erin Fetherston’s presented her Fall/Winter 2017 collection. Her muse is a girl who’s a big free-spirited traveller who collects pieces around the world and incorporates them into her wardrobe. The collection included metallic silks, jacquard, but most notably, fringe and velvet. It’s still a very modern take on the 70’s bohemian look. Often styled with long scarves. I am obsessed with the fringe dresses and love the burgundy velvet pieces.

Noon by Noor
Noon By Noor’s latest collection is based on the theme of fluidity. The pieces really focus on draping silhouettes and manipulating the fabric to emphasize cut. Panne velvet and fluid jerseys accentuate the light and shade of draped silhouettes, while textural gazar gives modern volume for evening. Many of the pieces appear simplistic, but in fact are detailed in work. I particularly love the beaded bodices and jackets. Below are a few of my favourites from the show. I would definitely want to wear these pieces so many different ways.Noon by Noor 1 Noon by NoorNoon By Noor : Fall 2017

I actually haven’t attended NYFW ever before so documenting your time there was really inspiring to read. I’m actually an introvert so it’s hard for me to assimilate in social settings, but that’s so great that it comes natural to you. I think you looked amazing while your time in New York. You looked great in all the pinks.

That’s so funny. I know how you feel because when it comes to Spring, LA can be ahead if you’re into trends and runway trends, but in Winter, I’m always way behind everyone else because it just doesn’t get cold enough. Going to NYC and Paris this winter was so refreshing for me. I loved the cold, but now that Spring is on its way, I’m happy to spring forward to SS17 and FW17. 🙂

OMG those Tadashi Shoji gowns have my heart. And I adore the pink on pink look! You can never have too much pink. That off the shoulder top you are wearing is such a good way to disrupt the soft pastel pink with a bolder color. Hope you’re enjoying your time in NYC! I love returning to visit too.

I’ve been wanting to go to NYFW week for years now but it’s just never panned out as planned. Still I get to live vicariously through others so I don’t get to miss out on the details as such. NYFW on the streets definitely felt like the emphasis was on warmth above all else, considering the blizzard and such hahaha. I loved seeing so much (faux) fur and oversized silhouettes. So dreamy and had me yearning for winter to roll around on my side of the world.
