How to Spend a Day in Miami

New York had long been my favourite city in the US; a place I wanted to live and grow my career. As I visit Miami more and more, I feel the pendulum swing more in its favour. I love the hustle of New York, but the perfect mix of palm trees, beach life and city exists in this beautiful destination. The city has a great mix of everything from art, food, music, fashion, entertainment, and of course, a beautiful beach and an international airport that makes it easy to get to plenty of worldwide destinations. It’s a city that leaves me wanting to see more. Today, I’m sharing a travel diary on how to spend a day in Miami.

With how much we travel, we don’t always stay in luxurious places. Each and every time we visit we stay somewhere different to get a sense of the areas of Miami. At this point, I really should start taking Spanish lessons since I spend so much time there! Here’s a quick itinerary below.

HOW TO SPEND A DAY IN MIAMI

There are a couple of recommendations I’d make for breakfast in Miami. If you’re staying near the city and want a great brunch with coffee stop into All Day. The parking lot behind is a little bit of a mess on the weekends from late night clubbers, so uber or find street parking nearby. For all of your who need a shot for instagram, the actual breakfast bar is white and sleek. The latte is smooth, the empanada is tapa-sized yet flavourful. I particularly enjoyed the french toast and breakfast sandwich here.

Another spot I love is Morgan’s Restaurant, but if you go on the weekend, be prepared to wait a full hour before you are seated. The French toast and blueberry pancakes are so delicious here.

A trip to Miami is not complete unless you’ve hit the beach. If you want to be where all the party-goers are, South Beach Miami is the place to be, but it is very crowded and most of the crowd happen to be visitors. If you want the beauty of the beach but a more local feel, enjoy a stroll around Oceans Drive, have drinks there and then drive up towards Mid and North Beach and get your tan on there.

Before Dinner
I really loved the Viscaya Museum. I have photos from my visit here. It’s small but really pretty and picturesque. If you just want to wander through leisurely we recommend about 1 to 1.5 hours

Mid-day Indulgence
If you like donuts, you must stop by The Salty Donut to try a few. They are delicious. Since it’s located near Wynwood Art District, you can take some photos near numerous graffiti walls.

Dinner
My favourite fine dining spot happens to be The Forge. An emperor has dined there, Michael Jackson has held a party there. The decor all has a wealth of history as well. Some are from cathedrals, palaces, and so forth. Definitely a glamourous old-money destination that we try to return to when we can. For someone on a smaller budget, PM Restaurant in Brickell is a cute spot. The ceviche is delicious and the tiramisu takes me right back to Italy.

Evening at Museum of Ice Cream
Seek no more if you want instagrammable shots surrounded by all-pink rooms. The photos we’ve shot here are from that exhibit and we had a lot of fun. It’s not the most affordable museum event we’ve been to and I’d recommend doing it once if you don’t have a tight budget.
If you’re in Miami before the exhibition ends in May, stop into the Museum of Ice Cream. It’s really well done, creative and very fun. It is so photogenic, and can take up to about 2 hours to get through if you want to take your time browsing, taking photos, enjoy the art, ice cream and facts in each room. I also recommend Viscaya Museum. The property is pretty. See blog post here.

Night Life
If you’re like me and are no longer into the party scene but loves a great lounge or view, check out Sugar or Area 31. I also have a couple of beautiful spots you can check out for a drink here.

I’ve actually never been to Miami before even though I’ve been to Florida a few times. All of these places look like must-go-visit places. Those donuts look so delicious and I love that they have the Museum of Ice Cream there as well. The fun, colorful lifeguard stand and the french toast and latte all sound fab! I definitely need to go and visit sometime soon! xoxo, Christine
